The Farm

The farm is situated in Cambridgeshire on a total of 53 acres. When we took ownership in 2016 the land had been unattended for some years and overgrown with thistle and mayweed. With local organic expert Mike Radford’s guidance we are now fully certified organic.

The margins around the arable fields create a haven of wild grass and flowers for all kinds of birds, insects and creatures to flourish. The hedges health and longevity benefit from the ancient art of hedge-laying, which includes fruit trees planted every 30 metres or so. More than 90 trees were planted in the process. The small allotment produces seasonal fruits, flowers and vegetables.

Margent’s farmhouse, designed by Material Cultures is principally made of hempcrete processed from our first year’s fibre crop. Alongside it an all purpose studio, supervised by our architect Paloma Gormley and constructed as part of Cass Arts graduation program was made with the same hemp materials. Both buildings exterior walls are clad with Margent’s corrugated hemp fibre rain sheets. The soft fibres are thermal compressed using a farm waste resin. The buildings are powered by a sustainable biomass boiler, domestic wind turbine and a subtle array of solar panels.
